Frequently Asked Questions

Q What is the purpose of this dashboard?

The dashboard provides a local view of how U.S. exports to Canada contribute to jobs and industry activity in every congressional district. It supports fact-based discussions on trade, supply-chain resilience, and North American competitiveness.

Q Why does this matter?

Every U.S. district trades with Canada. Those exports sustain local jobs and businesses, forming the foundation of a balanced and resilient North American economy. The dashboard makes that relationship visible at the local level — grounded in data, not rhetoric.

Q What data sources are used?

The dashboard uses data from Trade Partnerships Worldwide LLC which draws on official data from:

  • The U.S. Census Bureau (goods trade statistics).
  • The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (services trade and employment data).
State-level exports and employment patterns are then allocated to congressional districts using local industry composition and job data.

Q What geographic areas are covered?

The dashboard includes data for all 435 U.S. congressional districts, as well as four additional areas:

  • Washington, D.C. (“DC”)
  • Puerto Rico (“PR”)
  • S. Virgin Islands (“VI”)
  • Unknown state of origin (“UN”)

The “UN” category captures shipments where the exporting state cannot be identified. This group is particularly significant in the case of Canada, as it includes low-value exports that are estimated rather than directly tracked.

Q How often is the data updated?

Updates are aligned with the latest available releases from 2024. The Business Data Lab will aim to update the dashboard once 2025 annual data become available.

Q How should policymakers and businesses use this tool?
